Directions
From the north – enter Palmerston North on SH3 (Rangitikei Street), turn left on to Featherston Street, and then left again on to North Street.
From the south – follow signs to Wanganui and follow SH3 (Rangitikei Street), turn right on to Featherston Street, and then left on to North Street.
Parking is along the side of North Street. The arena is adjacent to the PNBHS rugby field grandstand.

Hazards: some courses may have route choices which include the possibility of running along the footpaths beside Featherston Street and Rangitikei Street. These streets themselves are strictly out of bounds (purple hatching) and runners must stick to the footpaths. Two short streets Edgeware Road and Wellesbourne Street, which are off Rangitikei Street should have little or no traffic (they are both dead-ends) and may be crossed. If crossing these streets it is the runner’s responsibility to do so safely, and runners should stick to the footpaths on these streets unless actually crossing. Featherston Street and Rangitikei Street do not need to be crossed.

Mappers Notes
The area we call “Watchtower” was mapped and used in the 90s before being logged. We transferred our attention further north before coming back in 2022. Some things are the same but a lot is different – in particular a rise in the water table, creating some large swamps. We list here some background to our current mapping and hope it will increase your enjoyment.
From east to west there are three zones. The eastern third has been thinned fairly cleanly – possibly the thinnings taken out for posts. There’s a bit of slash, and we’ve mapped it as wide green stripe (good visibility). Machines have made a LOT of tracks in this process. We HAVEN’T mapped them because there are so many and they fade in and out. They are going to disappear in time.
The middle third hasn’t been thinned yet. There are decaying prunings on the ground and reduced visibility. Last year we called it light green, this year we have reclassified most of it as white. With plenty of contour features, this is in really nice condition at present. We’re mostly in these two zones, with only C1 going into the western third.
The western third is a mixture. There’s a number of marshes, mostly impassable. During the winter the water level rises, in summer it falls. There are zones where you can pass (perhaps with wet feet) into a fairly narrow but passable macrocarpa strip. Beyond that there’s a thick barrier of a dense shrub which prevents getting out onto the beach.
The maze of tracks that used to be there was lost in the logging, and there’s only one significant walking/biking track now. We’ve only got the forest road pattern, and some roadside clearings for log handling. This makes it hard to set white, yellow and orange courses, but perfect for red😊 We’ve provided white and yellow with taped routes.
The large uncrossable marshes don’t have a black line round them as the edge is a bit moveable. Often there’s a rim of thick vegetation there anyway. We rarely use the “fight” green except for piles of logging stumps etc. We’ve used medium green for everything that’s no use for orienteering – and probably haven’t been inside it.
Hydrabad – Multiday distance forest event– Sunday 9 April

Click this link (here) to a previous version of the map , as used in 2022 for a Red Kiwis activity. Note the many thin rough open routes that were a feature of recent versions of the map have been removed for Easter 2023.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When driving into the forest, please watch out for dog teams and people driving out of the forest. There is a dog sled club meeting which is due to finish by 10 am on Easter Sunday. They will be using some of the main trails for their meeting and leaving the forest via the road we enter. Be careful and considerate driving through the forest, and rest assured that their finish time is before our first runner’s start.

Safety “bearing”: The roads are numbered. Roads 1 (inland/east), 2, and 3 (seaward side/west) run north-south. Other roads run east-west. The event centre is on Rd 3, near the junction with Rd 5.
Directions
Drive to Waitarere Beach, go straight on at the roundabout at the edge of the village and take the next left hand turn into Forest Road. You will be checked at the forest gate, be prepared to show your SportIdent – or look trustworthy!
Follow signs through the forest roads for approximately 3 km. We enter on Road 2, and turn right onto Road 6, turn back north on Road 3. Park as directed, compactly on the side of the road. Leave room for people to exit the forest – we will exit along the same way as we came in. Please watch out for the dog sled drivers on your way in.
